Disarticulating is the act of disarticulating, i.e., separating or removing bones at a joint. The term comes from Latin dis- meaning apart and articulus meaning joint. As a verb, it describes the action or process of causing a joint to separate or of performing a disarticulation.

In medical contexts, disarticulation refers to a surgical amputation through a joint. This is distinct from amputation through bone, which severs the limb away from the joint itself. Examples include shoulder disarticulation, hip disarticulation, and radiocarpal (wrist) or tibiotalar (ankle) disarticulations. Indications include severe joint trauma, malignant disease, unreconstructible deformity, or certain congenital conditions. Outcomes depend on tissue preservation, rehabilitation, and prosthetic options, and the procedure carries risks such as infection, blood loss, and functional limitations.

In anatomy, paleontology, and related fields, disarticulation describes the separation of skeletal elements at their joints. This may occur naturally during decomposition or transport, or be employed deliberately during dissection or fossil preparation. Disarticulated remains may require reassembly for study, display, or analysis.
