Directionassociation, sometimes referred to as directional association, is a term used in statistics and data analysis to describe the directional tendency of a relationship between two variables. It captures whether increases in one variable are systematically associated with increases or decreases in the other, indicating positive or negative directionality. This concept is distinct from the strength of a relationship, though both aspects are often considered together when interpreting data.

Quantification of direction association typically relies on signs and slopes. The sign of a Pearson correlation coefficient indicates direction: a positive sign suggests that higher values of one variable tend to accompany higher values of the other, while a negative sign indicates the opposite. In regression, the sign of the slope similarly conveys direction, with a positive slope implying that the dependent variable tends to rise as the predictor increases. However, correlation is symmetric and does not reveal which variable causes the other; it only signals association direction. To infer causal direction, additional analyses such as time-order assessment, Granger causality, or causal modeling are often employed.

Assessing directional association also involves recognizing limitations. Nonlinear relationships can mask directionality in simple correlational measures, and confounding variables can produce apparent direction without a direct link. Time-series data allow for lag-based analyses and information-theoretic measures like transfer entropy to detect directional dependence.
