dijisteis

Dijisteis is the second-person plural preterite form of the Spanish verb decir, used with the informal plural subject vosotros. It translates to you all said or you all told in English. The form is specific to dialects that employ the vosotros form, mainly in Spain.

Morphology and usage: decir in the preterite has the irregular stem dij- across all persons: dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron. Dijisteis is formed from the stem dij- plus the preterite ending -isteis. Note that the ellos/ellas/ustedes form is dijeron, with the ending -eron, not -ieron. In standard written Spanish, dijisteis is the expected form when the audience is addressed as vosotros; in many other Spanish varieties (especially in Latin America), the vosotros form is not used, and ustedes dijeron is common for the second-person plural past tense.

Geographic and register notes: dijisteis is most frequent in Spain and in texts or speech where the vosotros form is used. In formal or cross-dialect writing that avoids vosotros, alternative constructions with ustedes are preferred: ustedes dijeron, or simply dijeron in contexts where the subject is explicit or understood.

Examples: ¿Qué dijisteis al recibir la noticia? (What did you all say when you received the news?) Dijisteis la verdad, pero nadie lo creyó. No dijisteis nada durante la reunión.
