Dijalog is a form of communication in which two or more participants exchange spoken utterances to share information, argue a point, or explore ideas. In Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, and other South Slavic languages, dijalog is the everyday term for "dialogue" or "dialog." The concept is used across literature, philosophy, theater, and conversation.

Etymology and usage: The word derives from the Greek dia- "through" and logos "speech," via Latin and early modern European languages. In its Slavic usage, dijalog covers both character-to-character exchanges in fiction and the more abstract exchange of ideas in analysis or debate.

Forms and purposes: In literature and drama, dijalog reveals character, advances plot, and conveys themes through spoken interaction. Philosophical works often employ dialogic form, notably the Socratic dialogue, to examine assumptions. In conversation analysis and linguistics, dijalog is studied for turn-taking, alignment, and stance.

In education and media, dialogic approaches encourage participation and critical thinking—learning through discussion rather than one-way lecturing. In writing and film, the quality of dijalog is judged by clarity, plausibility of speech, and its ability to reveal motives and relationships.
