Dihydroxyacetone, often abbreviated as DHA, is a simple carbohydrate, specifically a triose sugar. Its chemical formula is C3H6O3. It is the simplest of the ketosis sugars and exists as a dimer in solution. DHA is a naturally occurring substance found in many plants and can also be produced through fermentation.

In the cosmetic industry, dihydroxyacetone is widely used as the active ingredient in sunless tanning products. When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin, through a process called the Maillard reaction. This reaction creates melanoidins, which are brown pigments that mimic a natural tan. The browning effect is temporary and typically lasts for several days as the skin's outer layer naturally exfoliates.

Dihydroxyacetone is generally considered safe for topical use. However, some individuals may experience mild skin irritation or allergic reactions. It is important to avoid inhaling DHA, as it can irritate the respiratory tract. For this reason, spray tan applications should be done in well-ventilated areas or with protective measures. DHA itself does not provide any protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation and therefore does not act as a sunscreen.
