Digitalisista refers to a collection of cardiac glycosides derived from plants of the genus Digitalis, most notably Digitalis purpurea (foxglove). These compounds have a long history of medicinal use, primarily for treating heart conditions such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation. The active components, like digoxin and digitoxin, work by inhibiting the sodium-potassium pump in heart muscle cells. This inhibition leads to an increase in intracellular calcium concentration, which in turn strengthens the force of myocardial contraction (positive inotropic effect).
