Digitalgrößen refers to the fundamental units used to measure and represent digital information. The smallest unit of digital information is a bit, which can represent either a 0 or a 1. Bits are grouped together to form larger units. A byte, for example, is typically composed of eight bits and is often used to represent a single character, such as a letter or number.

As the volume of digital data grew, larger units were needed. Kilobytes (KB) were introduced, with one KB approximately equal to 1024 bytes. This was followed by megabytes (MB), where one MB is roughly 1024 kilobytes, and gigabytes (GB), where one GB is approximately 1024 megabytes. For even larger amounts of data, terabytes (TB), petabytes (PB), exabytes (EB), zettabytes (ZB), and yottabytes (YB) are used, each representing a significant increase in capacity.

These digitalgrößen are essential for understanding storage capacity on devices like hard drives and USB drives, as well as for measuring data transfer rates and file sizes. The prefixes kilo, mega, giga, and so on, are based on powers of two in the context of digital information, differentiating them from their metric counterparts used in other scientific fields.
