Difúziót is a concept describing the net movement of anything generally from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. This movement is driven by the random motion of particles. Imagine a drop of ink placed in water. Initially, the ink molecules are highly concentrated in one spot. Through random molecular motion, these ink molecules will spread out into the surrounding water until they are evenly distributed. This process is diffusion.

The rate of diffusion depends on several factors, including the size and mass of the particles, the temperature of the medium, and the concentration gradient. Smaller and lighter particles tend to diffuse faster. Higher temperatures provide particles with more kinetic energy, increasing their speed and thus their diffusion rate. A larger difference in concentration between two regions, known as a steeper concentration gradient, also leads to faster diffusion.

Diffusion is a fundamental process occurring in many natural phenomena. In biology, it is crucial for the transport of substances across cell membranes, such as the movement of oxygen into cells and carbon dioxide out. In chemistry, diffusion plays a role in mixing solutions and the rate of chemical reactions. It is also observed in the spreading of smells through the air and the gradual mixing of different gases. The process continues until equilibrium is reached, where the concentration is uniform throughout the system, although random motion of particles still occurs.
