Diffuusiotensorimagneettinen (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that enables the measurement and visualization of the diffusion process of water molecules in biological tissues, particularly in the white matter of the brain. This advanced imaging method provides valuable insights into the microstructural organization and connectivity of neural pathways.

In DTI, the diffusion of water molecules is not uniform but rather follows the direction of the white matter tracts due to the presence of myelin sheaths and axonal structures. By applying diffusion-sensitizing gradients in multiple directions, DTI can quantify the diffusion tensor, a 3D mathematical representation of water diffusion at each voxel. From the diffusion tensor, various scalar measures can be derived, such as fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD), which reflect different aspects of tissue integrity and organization.

DTI has a wide range of clinical and research applications. It is particularly useful in the study of neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases, where changes in white matter integrity can be detected and quantified. Additionally, DTI is employed in neuroscience research to map out the brain's connectome, the comprehensive network of neural connections, and to investigate the structural basis of brain function and behavior.

Despite its advantages, DTI has some limitations. The technique is sensitive to artifacts, such as head motion and eddy currents, which can affect the quality of the images and the accuracy of the derived measures. Furthermore, DTI assumes that water diffusion within each voxel follows a Gaussian distribution, which may not hold true in complex tissue environments. Advanced diffusion MRI techniques, such as diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), have been developed to address some of these limitations and provide more detailed information about tissue microstructure.
