Diffraktet is a phenomenon observed when a wave encounters an obstacle or aperture. Instead of continuing in a straight line, the wave bends or spreads out as it passes around or through the opening. This bending is a direct consequence of the wave nature of light, sound, or other wave phenomena. The extent of diffraction depends on the size of the obstacle or aperture relative to the wavelength of the wave. When the wavelength is comparable to or larger than the size of the obstacle, diffraction effects are more pronounced.

This principle is observable in various everyday situations. For instance, when light passes through a narrow slit, it doesn't simply create a sharp shadow. Instead, a pattern of bright and dark fringes appears, which is a hallmark of diffraction. Similarly, sound waves can bend around corners, allowing us to hear someone in another room even if we cannot see them. The study of diffraction is fundamental to understanding wave behavior and has applications in fields such as optics, acoustics, and crystallography. Diffraction gratings, for example, are used to separate light into its constituent wavelengths, a principle utilized in spectroscopy.
