Diazobenzene is a chemical compound with the formula C6H5N2. It is a diazo compound, meaning it contains the diazo group (N=N) attached to an organic substituent. In the case of diazobenzene, the organic substituent is a phenyl group (C6H5). This compound is also known as benzenediazonium chloride when it exists as a salt, which is a more common and stable form. Benzenediazonium chloride is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water.

Diazobenzene and its salts are important intermediates in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of azo dyes. The diazo group is highly reactive and can undergo various coupling reactions with aromatic compounds, leading to the formation of colored azo compounds. These azo dyes are widely used in textiles, printing inks, and food coloring. This instability necessitates careful handling and storage conditions. Its synthesis typically involves the diazotization of aniline, where aniline is treated with nitrous acid (generated in situ from sodium nitrite and a strong acid) at low temperatures. The resulting diazonium salt is then used immediately or stored under refrigeration.
