Diasporastudier is an interdisciplinary field that examines diasporas and their social, political, and cultural dynamics. It addresses how dispersed communities maintain links to homelands, navigate host societies, and shape identities across borders. The field analyzes networks, memory, belonging, remittances, transnational practices, and diaspora diplomacy.

Diasporastudier covers forced and voluntary migrations, refugee movements, exile communities, and return migrations. It investigates homeland-state relations, transnational politics, cultural production, language maintenance, religion, education, and integration policies in receiving societies. It also considers the roles of gender, class, race, and sexuality in diasporic experiences.

The field draws on transnationalism, hybridity, post-colonial theory, cosmopolitanism, and memory studies, alongside traditional migration theory. Methods include ethnography, interviews, archival research, quantitative surveys, and digital methods analyzing social media and online networks.

Common topics include diaspora entrepreneurship and economic contributions through remittances, social capital, political mobilization, diaspora mediation in conflicts, cultural heritage and media production, education and transnational schooling.

Scholars assess risks of essentializing diasporas, echo chambers, or homogenizing identities. Ethical considerations include representation, consent, and the politics of memory. The field also engages debates about inclusion, power, and the global distribution of knowledge.
