Diagenesis refers to all physical, chemical, and biological changes that happen to sediment after it is deposited and buried, but before it reaches the metamorphic stage. These processes occur at relatively low temperatures and pressures, typically below 200 degrees Celsius and 200 megapascals. Diagenesis is a crucial step in the transformation of loose sediment into solid rock.

Key diagenetic processes include compaction, cementation, recrystallization, dissolution, and replacement. Compaction occurs as the weight of overlying sediment squeezes out pore water and reduces the volume of the sediment. Cementation involves the precipitation of minerals, such as calcite, silica, or iron oxides, from pore water into the spaces between sediment grains, binding them together. Recrystallization can alter the size and shape of mineral grains. Dissolution can remove unstable minerals, creating or enlarging pore spaces. Replacement occurs when one mineral is chemically altered into another.

These diagenetic changes profoundly influence the physical and chemical properties of sedimentary rocks, affecting their porosity, permeability, strength, and the potential for hydrocarbon or groundwater storage.
