Diagenesis refers to all physical, chemical, and biological changes that happen to sediment after it is deposited but before it is subjected to metamorphism. This process transforms loose sediment into sedimentary rock. Diagenetic processes are critical in understanding the formation of various rock types and the preservation or alteration of organic matter within them.

Key diagenetic processes include compaction, cementation, dissolution, recrystallization, and authigenesis. Compaction occurs as overlying sediments increase pressure, reducing pore space and expelling pore fluids.
