Physical changes during diagenesis include compaction, where the weight of overlying sediment squeezes out pore space and water, and cementation, where minerals precipitate from pore fluids and bind sediment grains together. Dissolution, where minerals are dissolved by pore fluids, and recrystallization, where mineral structures change, are also common physical processes.

Chemical changes involve alterations in the mineralogy and chemistry of the sediment and pore fluids. This can include the formation of new minerals, the alteration of existing ones, and changes in the chemical composition of the pore water due to reactions with minerals and organic matter. Oxidation and reduction reactions are particularly important in altering mineral stability and composition.

Biological activity, primarily microbial activity, plays a significant role in early diagenesis. Microbes can break down organic matter, influencing the pore water chemistry and facilitating the precipitation or dissolution of minerals. Bioturbation, the reworking of sediment by organisms, can also mix sediments and influence diagenetic processes.

The cumulative effect of diagenetic processes is the transformation of unconsolidated sediments into sedimentary rocks like sandstone, shale, and limestone. The specific diagenetic pathway depends on factors such as the type of sediment, the composition of the pore fluids, burial depth, temperature, and time. These alterations are crucial for understanding the geological history and potential resource content of sedimentary basins.
