A diaphragm pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses a flexible diaphragm to move fluids. The diaphragm, typically made of rubber or plastic, is attached to a connecting rod or pushrod, which is driven by a motor or engine. As the rod moves back and forth, it flexes the diaphragm, creating a pumping action.

In a typical diaphragm pump, there are two chambers separated by the diaphragm. As the diaphragm moves outward, it creates a vacuum in one chamber, drawing fluid in through an inlet valve. Simultaneously, as the diaphragm moves inward, it pushes fluid out of the other chamber through an outlet valve. This reciprocating motion ensures a continuous flow of fluid.

Diaphragm pumps can be air-operated (AODD pumps) or mechanically operated. Air-operated diaphragm pumps use compressed air to move the diaphragm, making them suitable for hazardous environments as they are air-driven and have no electrical components. Mechanically operated diaphragm pumps use a motor or engine to drive the connecting rod.

These pumps are known for their ability to handle a wide range of fluids, including corrosive, abrasive, and viscous liquids, as well as slurries and solids. They are also self-priming and can run dry without damage. Common applications include chemical processing, wastewater treatment, food and beverage production, and mining.
