Deism is a philosophical belief system that posits the existence of a supreme being or creator, often referred to as God, who is responsible for the creation of the universe. However, deists reject the idea of divine intervention in human affairs or the natural world. This means they do not believe in miracles, divine revelation, or the concept of a deity actively participating in the unfolding of history or individual lives after the initial act of creation.

Central to deistic thought is the reliance on reason and observation of the natural world as the primary means of understanding God and morality. Deists believe that the order, complexity, and beauty of the universe are sufficient evidence for the existence of a creator. They do not typically rely on religious scriptures, dogma, or organized religious institutions as sources of truth. Instead, they emphasize natural law and the inherent moral sense that they believe is bestowed upon humanity.

Many deists were prominent figures during the Enlightenment, a period that championed reason, individualism, and skepticism towards traditional authority. While deism shares some common ground with theism, particularly the belief in a creator, its fundamental divergence lies in the rejection of any ongoing, personal relationship or communication between God and humanity. Deism is not a religion in the traditional sense, as it lacks formal rituals, clergy, or a codified set of doctrines.
