Devascularization is a medical procedure that involves blocking or removing blood supply to a specific area or organ. This can be done for various reasons, such as to starve a tumor of nutrients and oxygen, or to control bleeding in certain conditions. The goal is to reduce the vascularity, or the network of blood vessels, in the targeted tissue.

There are several methods of devascularization. Embolization is a common technique where tiny particles, coils, or agents are injected into the blood vessels supplying the area, effectively blocking them. Surgical resection is another approach, where the affected tissue and its blood vessels are physically removed. Sometimes, medications can also be used to inhibit the growth of new blood vessels, a process known as anti-angiogenesis, which can be considered a form of systemic devascularization.

The application of devascularization varies widely. In oncology, it's often used to shrink tumors or prevent their growth and spread. It can also be employed in the treatment of certain vascular malformations, uterine fibroids, or to manage severe bleeding from conditions like esophageal varices. The specific technique and its effectiveness depend on the location, size, and nature of the condition being treated. Complications can include damage to surrounding healthy tissues or the recurrence of the condition if the devascularization is incomplete.
