Detrituszágak, often translated as "detritus branches" or "organic debris branches," are a significant ecological concept in aquatic environments, particularly in streams and rivers. They refer to the accumulation of dead organic matter, primarily plant material like fallen leaves, twigs, and bark, that has settled or become lodged within the stream channel. This organic debris forms crucial microhabitats and provides essential resources for a diverse range of aquatic organisms.

The formation of detrituszágak is a natural process driven by the input of allochthonous organic matter from the surrounding terrestrial ecosystem. Factors such as watershed vegetation type, stream gradient, and flow dynamics influence the amount and distribution of this debris. In-stream processes, including decomposition by microorganisms and physical breakdown, also contribute to their characteristics.

Detrituszágak serve multiple ecological functions. They act as substrates for biofilm development, which is a primary food source for invertebrates like shredders and grazers. The physical structure of the debris also provides shelter and refuge from predators and high water velocities for various macroinvertebrates, small fish, and amphibians.
