Detektory are devices that sense physical quantities and convert them into readable signals. They cover a broad range of technologies and applications, from scientific instrumentation to everyday safety devices. Detektorami is the instrumental plural form of the Polish noun detektor, used in phrases describing the instruments by which measurements are made.

Detectors can be categorized by what they detect. Ionizing radiation detectors include Geiger counters, scintillation detectors with photomultiplier tubes, and semiconductor detectors such as silicon or germanium devices. Particle detectors used in high-energy physics, such as tracking detectors and calorimeters, measure properties of subatomic particles. Chemical sensors and biosensors detect chemical species or biological signals, often converting them into electrical outputs. Optical detectors include photodiodes, photomultiplier tubes, and imaging sensors (CCD/CMOS) that respond to light. Infrared and thermal detectors, like bolometers and thermopiles, respond to heat radiation. Magnetic and electric detectors, including SQUIDs and Hall sensors, sense magnetic or electric fields. Security applications include metal detectors and X-ray scanners.

Operating principles center on transduction: a physical interaction induces a measurable change in an electrical, optical, or mechanical signal. The signal is amplified, processed, calibrated, and interpreted to yield quantitative measurements, alarms, or images. Performance depends on factors such as sensitivity, resolution, dynamic range, noise, and environmental conditions. Detectors are often integrated into systems—imaging devices, spectrometers, surveillance networks, or medical imaging apparatus.

Applications span basic research, medicine (for example, imaging and diagnostic detectors), industry and safety (nuclear monitoring, border security, environmental surveillance), and consumer electronics where optical or environmental sensing is embedded in devices.
