Destillatet is the liquid product obtained through distillation, a separation process that relies on differences in boiling points among the components of a liquid mixture. The term is used in Danish and Norwegian and corresponds to the English word distillate. Distillates can vary widely in composition, depending on the starting material and the distillation method used.

Distillation methods encompass several approaches. Simple distillation handles mixtures with clearly different boiling points, while fractional distillation uses packing or columns to improve separation when boiling points are close. Steam distillation uses steam to lower the effective boiling point of volatile compounds, often protecting heat‑sensitive components. Vacuum distillation reduces pressure to lower boiling points and prevent thermal decomposition.

Common types of distillates include alcoholic distillates (for example, ethyl alcohol obtained from fermented liquids), petroleum distillates (such as naphtha, kerosene, and various fuel fractions), and essential oil distillates (produced by steam distillation of plant material, yielding fragrances or flavorings like rose or citrus oils).

Properties of distillates are largely defined by their boiling point ranges and the nature of impurities. Purity is about the absence of undesired higher‑boiling components, but many distillates are mixtures with characteristic aromas, colors, or densities. They are widely used as solvents, fuels, fragrance ingredients, and intermediates in pharmaceuticals and chemical synthesis.

Safety considerations are important: distillates are often flammable and may release toxic vapors. Proper handling requires adequate ventilation, appropriate containment, and attention to temperature control and fire protection.

Historically, distillation dates to ancient times and was developed further in the Islamic Golden Age and later in Europe. The concept of destillatet in Scandinavian languages reflects this broad industrial and scientific practice.
