Destilácie is a process used to separate components of a liquid mixture by selective boiling and condensation. This method relies on the difference in the boiling points of the substances within the mixture. When the liquid is heated, the component with the lowest boiling point will vaporize first. This vapor then rises and is guided into a cooler area, where it condenses back into a liquid. This condensed liquid, now enriched in the more volatile component, can be collected separately.

There are various types of distillation, each suited for different separation tasks. Simple distillation is effective for separating liquids with significantly different boiling points or for separating a volatile liquid from a non-volatile solute. Fractional distillation is employed when the boiling points of the components are close. It uses a fractionating column to provide a larger surface area for repeated vaporization and condensation cycles, leading to a more efficient separation. Steam distillation is used for temperature-sensitive compounds that might decompose at their boiling points. In this method, steam is passed through the mixture, lowering the boiling points of the components. Vacuum distillation is employed for substances that have very high boiling points or are susceptible to degradation at atmospheric pressure. By reducing the pressure, the boiling points are lowered, allowing for distillation at lower temperatures.

The primary applications of distillation are found in various industries. In the petrochemical industry, it's crucial for refining crude oil into useful fractions like gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel. The alcoholic beverage industry utilizes distillation to increase the concentration of alcohol in spirits such as whiskey, vodka, and rum. Pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturing also rely heavily on distillation for purifying compounds and obtaining specific chemical substances.
