Dessecanten, or desiccants, are substances that remove moisture from air or gases. They work by attracting water either by adsorption onto a surface or by absorption into a material, thereby lowering the relative humidity in a confined space or stream. Dessecanten are widely used to protect moisture-sensitive materials during storage and transport, and they are a key component of desiccators in laboratory settings.

Common dessecanten include silica gel, activated alumina, molecular sieves (zeolites), calcium chloride, and montmorillonite clays. Silica gel is a porous, high-surface-area form of hydrated silica that physically adsorbs water. Calcium chloride is highly hygroscopic and can absorb large amounts of water, forming brine. Molecular sieves are crystalline aluminosilicates with defined pore sizes that selectively adsorb water. Drierite (calcium sulfate) and other clays provide alternative moisture control. Some dessecanten include color indicators to signal when they are exhausted, such as cobalt- or iron-based indicators.

Applications span packaging of food, electronics, and medicines to prevent moisture damage, pharmaceutical storage to maintain anhydrous conditions, and laboratory equipment such as desiccators and moisture-control devices. They are also used in transport containers, shipping environments, and greenhouses to maintain specific humidity levels.

Regeneration and disposal depend on the material. Silica gel and many molecular sieves can be dried again by heating to drive off absorbed water, enabling reuse. Calcium chloride-containing desiccants are typically not regenerated and are replaced after saturation. Spent dessecanten should be disposed of according to local regulations; some indicators may pose toxicity concerns and require avoidance of ingestion and proper handling.
