Desikanttikuivaajat, often translated as desiccant dryers, are industrial equipment used to remove moisture from air or other gases. They function by utilizing a desiccant material, which has a high affinity for water molecules. These dryers typically operate in a regenerative cycle. In one phase, the process air passes through a bed of desiccant, where the moisture is adsorbed onto the desiccant material, resulting in dry air. In the second phase, the saturated desiccant bed is regenerated by heating it with a portion of the dry process air or a separate heated air stream. This heat drives off the adsorbed moisture, which is then vented to the atmosphere.

Desiccant dryers are particularly effective for applications requiring very low dew points, such as in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and chemical industries. They can achieve much lower moisture levels than refrigerant dryers. Common desiccant materials include silica gel, activated alumina, and molecular sieves, each chosen based on the specific application requirements and target dew point. The design of desiccant dryers can vary, with common types including rotating-wheel dryers and twin-tower systems. Rotating-wheel dryers continuously pass air through a slowly rotating wheel coated with desiccant, while twin-tower systems alternate between drying and regeneration cycles in separate towers. The selection of a desiccant dryer depends on factors like required airflow rate, desired dew point, operating temperature, and cost considerations.
