The causes of dermatitis are diverse, ranging from irritants and allergens to underlying medical conditions.

One common type is contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin comes into contact with a substance that causes a reaction. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused by direct damage to the skin from substances like harsh soaps or chemicals. Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune system response to an allergen, such as poison ivy or certain metals.

Atopic dermatitis, often referred to as eczema, is a chronic condition characterized by itchy, inflamed skin. It is frequently linked to genetics and other allergic conditions like asthma and hay fever. Seborrheic dermatitis affects areas rich in oil glands, like the scalp and face, causing flaky, yellowish scales.

Diagnosis of dermatitis typically involves a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history and potential exposures. Treatment strategies vary depending on the type and severity of dermatitis, and may include topical corticosteroids, moisturizers, antihistamines, and avoidance of trigger substances. In some cases, systemic medications or light therapy might be necessary. While many forms of dermatitis can be managed effectively, some chronic conditions may require ongoing care.
