Densitydetermines is a concept used to describe the idea that density largely determines the behavior and properties of substances and systems. While not a formal scientific theory, it is a shorthand used to emphasize the central role of density in physics, chemistry, geology, and engineering.

When two substances of different density are in contact, the denser phase tends to sink while the less dense phase rises, producing buoyant forces described by Archimedes' principle. In fluids, density contrasts govern flotation, layering, and the stability of suspensions.

Density differences drive stratification in liquids, sedimentation in suspensions, and gravitational differentiation inside planetary bodies. In chemical engineering, density-based separation methods such as decanting, centrifugation, and gravity separators rely on density contrasts.

The rate at which particles or droplets move through a medium is influenced by density relative to the surrounding medium. In diffusion-dominated processes, density affects buoyancy and convective flows; in atmospheres and oceans, density variations drive convection, weather systems, and thermohaline circulation.

Many design and analysis decisions depend on density, including material selection, packaging, pipelines, sediment transport, and environmental modeling. However, density is not the only determinant; viscosity, temperature, compressibility, surface tension, and chemical interactions also play crucial roles, and real materials can have nonuniform or anisotropic densities.
