Denormaaliluvut, also known as denormalized numbers or subnormal numbers, are a concept in floating-point arithmetic. In the IEEE 754 standard for floating-point numbers, denormalized numbers represent values that are too small to be represented as a normalized number. Normalized numbers have a leading implicit '1' in their significand, which allows for a greater range and precision.

When a floating-point calculation results in a value smaller than the smallest representable normalized number, it is represented as a denormalized number. Denormalized numbers sacrifice some precision and range to represent these very small values. Instead of an implicit leading '1', their significand has an implicit leading '0'. This allows them to represent values closer to zero than the smallest normalized number.

The transition from normalized to denormalized numbers occurs when the exponent reaches its minimum value. At this point, further decrements in magnitude lead to denormalized representations. While denormalized numbers extend the representable range towards zero, they can come with a performance penalty as processors may handle them differently, often slower than normalized numbers. This phenomenon is known as "denormalization traps" or "gradual underflow." Despite the potential performance implications, denormalized numbers are crucial for maintaining the accuracy of floating-point computations in scenarios involving very small magnitudes, preventing abrupt underflow to zero.
