Denoising is a process used in signal processing and image processing to reduce or remove unwanted noise from a signal or image. Noise can be introduced by various sources, such as sensor imperfections, transmission errors, or environmental interference. The goal of denoising is to recover the original, clean signal or image as closely as possible while preserving its important features.

There are numerous denoising techniques, broadly categorized into filtering-based methods and model-based methods. Filtering methods often involve applying a mathematical filter to the noisy data. Common filters include Gaussian filters, median filters, and Wiener filters. These filters work by averaging or smoothing neighboring data points, which can effectively reduce random noise. However, they can also blur important details in the signal or image.

Model-based methods, on the other hand, assume a certain model for the underlying signal and the noise. Techniques like wavelet denoising decompose the signal into different frequency components and then threshold or shrink the coefficients associated with noise. Other advanced methods utilize machine learning, particularly deep learning, where neural networks are trained on large datasets of noisy and clean data to learn effective denoising strategies.

The choice of denoising technique depends on the type of noise, the characteristics of the signal or image, and the desired trade-off between noise reduction and preservation of details. For instance, in medical imaging, preserving subtle anatomical features is crucial, while in audio processing, removing background hum might be the primary objective. Evaluating the effectiveness of denoising often involves quantitative metrics like Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) or Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), as well as subjective visual inspection.
