Demodulering, or demodulation in English, is the process of extracting the original information-bearing signal from a modulated carrier wave. It is the inverse of modulation and is essential in most radio receivers and data links.

In communications, modulation encodes information onto a carrier by varying its amplitude, frequency, or phase. Demodulation reverses this, recovering the baseband signal for further processing.

Different modulation types require different demodulation methods. Amplitude modulation uses envelope detection or coherent (synchronous) detection. Frequency and phase modulation use discriminators, phase-locked loops, or digital algorithms to recover instantaneous frequency or phase. In digital communications, demodulation recovers symbols from noisy waveforms using matched filtering, timing recovery, and decision logic; common schemes include QAM, PSK, and FSK.

In Scandinavian usage, the term demodulerende describes the act of demodulating or devices performing it.

Practical demodulation must cope with noise, distortion, multipath, and imperfect carrier recovery. Performance is described by metrics such as bit error ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, and bandwidth efficiency. Demodulation is a central function in receivers, modems, and wireless transceivers.
