demigender

Demigender is a gender identity in which a person identifies as partially, but not wholly, that gender. The term uses the prefix demi-, meaning half or partial, and is used by some people within gender-diverse communities to describe a partial alignment with a specific gender rather than a full identification with it. It is not a fixed category universal to all individuals, but one of many ways people may experience gender.

Common sub-identities include demigirl and demiboy, referring to partial alignment with being a girl/woman or a boy/man, respectively. Some people may identify as demigender toward other genders or as demigender toward more than one gender.

Experiences of demigender can vary. For some, the sense of partial alignment is enduring, while for others it may feel partial at certain times or in relation to different contexts. People may choose pronouns, names, or presentations that reflect their partial connection, but presentation is highly individual and not required to match any single label.

Demigender is often discussed alongside nonbinary and multigender identities within discussions of gender diversity. It is a self-identified concept and not a medical or psychological diagnosis. Respect for self-identification, pronouns, and terminology is encouraged in communities where demigender is used.
