Delimitace (from the notion of delimitation) denotes the process of defining, describing or establishing boundaries and limits of a territory, jurisdiction, object or conceptual category. It covers both physical boundaries—such as state borders, administrative units and property lines—and abstract boundaries like legislative competencies, electoral districts or categories in research.

In practice, delimitace involves legal, cartographic and technical procedures. International and domestic treaties, statutes and administrative orders often set legal parameters; surveying, geodesy and cartographic mapping translate those parameters into measurable coordinates; modern geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing increasingly support precision and visualization. Distinct but related is demarcation, the physical marking of an agreed boundary on the ground.

Delimitace appears across disciplines. In international law it is central to maritime and land boundary negotiations; in public administration it structures governance and resource allocation; in political science it shapes electoral districting and representation. In the natural and social sciences, delimitation denotes the identification of units for study—for example species delimitation in biology or delimiting research scope in project design.

Challenges include ambiguous historical claims, shifting natural features, competing legal regimes and technical limitations. Effective delimitace balances legal clarity, empirical accuracy and social or environmental considerations, and often involves negotiation, expert analysis and dispute-resolution mechanisms.
