Dekompozítorok, often translated as decomposers, are organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms. They are essential to the functioning of ecosystems because they recycle nutrients, making them available for producers like plants. Without decomposers, dead organic matter would accumulate indefinitely.

The primary decomposers in most terrestrial ecosystems are bacteria and fungi. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that can break down a wide variety of organic materials. Fungi, such as mushrooms, are multicellular organisms with a network of hyphae that secrete enzymes to digest organic matter externally before absorbing the nutrients.

In aquatic environments, bacteria and fungi also play a crucial role, but other organisms like certain types of invertebrates, such as worms and some crustaceans, also contribute to decomposition. These organisms are often referred to as detritivores, as they consume dead organic matter (detritus).

The decomposition process involves several stages. Initially, larger organic molecules are broken down into smaller ones. Then, these smaller molecules are further processed, releasing essential elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus back into the environment. This nutrient cycling is vital for supporting life in the ecosystem. The rate of decomposition can be influenced by factors such as temperature, moisture, and the type of organic material present.
