Deiconization is a term used in linguistics and semiotics to describe the process by which a sign or symbol loses its iconic relationship with its referent. An iconic sign is one that resembles or imitates what it represents, such as a picture of a cat representing a cat. Deiconization occurs when this resemblance fades or becomes less important, and the sign begins to function more conventionally or arbitrarily.

This process can happen for several reasons. Over time, the original visual or auditory link between the sign and its referent may become obscured due to cultural shifts, technological advancements, or simply the natural evolution of language and symbols. For example, early pictograms representing objects often bore a strong resemblance to those objects. As these pictograms were stylized and abstracted into written characters, their iconic quality diminished, and they became more conventional symbols.

Another aspect of deiconization involves the social and cognitive processes of users. As a symbol becomes widely used and understood within a community, its referential meaning becomes established through convention rather than direct resemblance. People learn to associate the symbol with its meaning, and the original iconic link, if it ever existed, becomes secondary or even entirely forgotten. This is evident in the evolution of many alphabetic characters, which often originated from more pictorial forms but have long since lost any obvious visual connection to their original representations.
