Defragmentation, or defragmenting, is the process of reorganizing data on a storage device so that related data is stored contiguously and free space is consolidated. The goal is to reduce fragmentation, which occurs when a file’s blocks become spread across noncontiguous areas of the disk as files are created, modified, and deleted. When fragments of many files are scattered, the disk head must move to multiple locations to read a single file, increasing access times and reducing overall performance. Defragmentation can improve sequential read performance and speed up file creation on traditional hard disk drives but has little or no benefit on devices that access data primarily at random or rely on solid-state storage.

Defragmentation tools typically rearrange file data and metadata, moving blocks to create larger contiguous regions and to place free space together. The process can be I/O intensive and may take a long time on large disks. Most defragmenters can run as a background task or during idle periods and may offer scheduling options. It is important to ensure data is backed up before performing large reorganizations, as power loss or errors during movement can risk data loss.

On solid-state drives, defragmentation is usually unnecessary and can cause unnecessary write activity, which reduces the drive’s lifespan. Modern operating systems instead rely on wear leveling and, for SSDs, techniques such as TRIM to maintain performance. In general, users should follow platform guidance: run defragmentation for hard disk drives with frequent file changes, while avoiding routine defragmentation on solid-state drives.
