Defragmentation, or defragmenting, is the process of reorganizing data on a storage device so that related data is stored contiguously and free space is consolidated. The goal is to reduce fragmentation, which occurs when a file’s blocks become spread across noncontiguous areas of the disk as files are created, modified, and deleted. When fragments of many files are scattered, the disk head must move to multiple locations to read a single file, increasing access times and reducing overall performance. Defragmentation can improve sequential read performance and speed up file creation on traditional hard disk drives but has little or no benefit on devices that access data primarily at random or rely on solid-state storage.
