Deficyt is an economic term describing a situation in which expenditures exceed revenues over a defined period. The instrumental form deficytem appears in Polish sentences to indicate the deficit as a thing or condition, for example z deficytem budżetu. In macroeconomics, deficits are most commonly discussed in relation to government budgets, but deficits can also occur in other accounts, such as the current account or trade balance.

Types and scope include budget deficit (deficyt budżetowy), current account deficit, and trade deficit. A related term is the primary deficit (deficyt pierwotny), which excludes interest payments on existing debt. Deficits can be reported in absolute currency terms or as a share of GDP, allowing comparison across countries and time. The cyclically adjusted deficit (deficyt skorygowany o cykl koniunkturalny) estimates the deficit if the economy were operating at potential output.

Causes of deficits vary and can be cyclical, structural, or a combination. Cyclical deficits arise from economic downturns that reduce revenues and raise certain expenditures, while structural deficits reflect long-term policy choices. Consequences may include rising public debt and interest obligations, potential impacts on creditworthiness, and, depending on financing, inflationary pressure or crowding out of private investment. In some circumstances deficits can support anti-recession policies and investment, but sustained deficits raise concerns about debt sustainability.
