Defibrillaattori, often referred to as a defibrillator, is a medical device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are user-friendly, equipped with voice and visual prompts that guide even untrained individuals through the process of delivering a shock if needed. They automatically analyze the heart rhythm and only advise a shock if it detects a life-threatening rhythm that can be treated by defibrillation.

The effectiveness of defibrillation is highly dependent on the time elapsed since the onset of cardiac arrest. Prompt defibrillation significantly increases the chances of survival. When a person collapses and is unresponsive, immediate CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) should be initiated while someone else retrieves and prepares the defibrillator. Early access to defibrillation is a crucial component of the chain of survival for sudden cardiac arrest victims.
