Deconvolution is a signal processing technique used to reverse the process of convolution. Convolution is a mathematical operation that describes how the shape of one function is modified by another function. In many real-world applications, a signal is convolved with an unknown function, often referred to as the point spread function or impulse response, obscuring the original signal. Deconvolution aims to recover the original signal by estimating and removing the effects of this blurring or spreading function.

Imagine taking a photograph. The camera lens and sensor introduce a blur, meaning the recorded image is a convolution of the true scene and the camera's point spread function. Deconvolution attempts to sharpen this image by estimating what that blur was and then undoing it. This process is inherently challenging because deconvolution is an ill-posed problem. Small errors or noise in the observed signal can be greatly amplified during the deconvolution process, leading to unstable or unrealistic results.

Various algorithms exist to perform deconvolution, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. These include simple inverse filtering, which directly divides the observed signal by the point spread function in the frequency domain, and more sophisticated methods like Wiener filtering and Lucy-Richardson deconvolution. These advanced techniques often incorporate assumptions or constraints to stabilize the process and improve the quality of the recovered signal. Deconvolution finds applications in diverse fields such as image processing, astronomy, medical imaging, seismic data analysis, and audio processing.
