Decontextualization is the process of removing something from its original context. This can refer to words, images, ideas, or objects. When something is decontextualized, its meaning or significance can be altered, misunderstood, or even completely changed. This happens because the original circumstances, surrounding information, or intended purpose are no longer present.

In communication, decontextualization can occur through misquotation, selective editing, or the removal of phrases from their surrounding sentences. This can lead to misinterpretations and the distortion of the original message. For example, a single sentence taken from a longer speech might seem to express a sentiment that the speaker did not intend when considered in isolation.

In art and design, decontextualization can involve presenting an object or image in a new setting, which can highlight different aspects of it or provoke new associations. Marcel Duchamp's readymades are a classic example, where ordinary manufactured objects were presented as art, shifting their context from functional items to objects for contemplation.

Similarly, in historical or cultural studies, decontextualizing artifacts or texts can lead to a loss of understanding about their original societal roles and meanings. Preserving the context is often crucial for accurate interpretation and analysis. The act of decontextualization, therefore, carries the potential for both revealing new perspectives and for creating misunderstandings.
