Deaminációt is the removal of an amino group from a molecule. This process occurs in various biochemical reactions, most notably in the metabolism of amino acids and nucleic acids.

In amino acid metabolism, deamination is a crucial step in breaking down proteins for energy. Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, contain amino groups. When the body needs to use amino acids for fuel, these amino groups are removed through deamination. The resulting molecule, typically a keto acid, can then enter cellular respiration pathways to produce ATP, the energy currency of the cell. The removed amino group is usually converted into ammonia, a toxic byproduct that the body then processes into urea for excretion.

Deamination also plays a role in the breakdown and recycling of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA. Adenine and guanine, two of the nitrogenous bases in DNA and RNA, can undergo deamination. For example, adenine can be deaminated to hypoxanthine, which is then further metabolized. Cytosine can be deaminated to uracil. These deamination reactions can occur spontaneously but are also catalyzed by specific enzymes. If these deamination events occur in DNA and are not repaired, they can lead to mutations.

Enzymes that catalyze deamination reactions are called deaminases. Different types of deaminases exist, each specific to the substrate they act upon. For instance, adenosine deaminase acts on adenosine, and amino acid oxidases catalyze the oxidative deamination of amino acids. The study of deamination is important for understanding metabolic disorders, genetic mutations, and the mechanisms of drug action, as many pharmaceuticals target enzymatic deamination processes.
