Dataimputering is the process of inferring and substituting missing or incomplete values in a dataset to enable analysis. It aims to preserve information and maintain the statistical properties of the data, rather than discarding records with missing values or leaving gaps.

Techniques range from simple to advanced. Simple methods include imputing numeric variables with the mean or median and categorical variables with the mode, or forward/backward filling in time-series data. More complex approaches include regression imputation, k-nearest neighbors imputation, and multiple imputation using chained equations (MICE). Model-based methods such as expectation-maximization (EM), Bayesian imputation, and machine learning models can estimate missing values conditioned on observed data. In time-series contexts, methods that respect temporal structure, like Kalman smoothing, may be used.

Key considerations include the mechanism causing missingness: MCAR (missing completely at random), MAR (missing at random), and MNAR (missing not at random). The choice of method depends on this mechanism and on the acceptable level of uncertainty. Multiple imputation propagates missing-data uncertainty by creating several imputed datasets and combining results using Rubin’s rules. Validation may compare imputed values against known data, or assess the impact on downstream analyses and model performance.

Applications span healthcare records, survey data, finance, environmental sensors, and customer databases. Limitations include potential bias if imputation models are misspecified, increased computational requirements, and privacy concerns when imputing sensitive information.
