Dabigatran etexilate is an oral anticoagulant medication. It belongs to a class of drugs known as direct thrombin inhibitors. Dabigatran etexilate itself is a prodrug, meaning it is inactive until it is converted in the body into its active form, dabigatran. Dabigatran works by directly inhibiting thrombin, a key enzyme in the blood clotting cascade. By blocking thrombin, it prevents the formation of blood clots.

This medication is primarily prescribed to prevent stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and to prevent their recurrence. In some cases, it may be used for prophylaxis after hip or knee replacement surgery.

Dabigatran etexilate is taken orally, typically twice a day. Dosing is based on factors such as kidney function and the indication for treatment. It does not require routine monitoring of blood clotting levels, which distinguishes it from older anticoagulants like warfarin.
