Aveloppes, also known as développés, are a fundamental movement in classical ballet technique. The term "développé" is French for "unfolded." It describes the action of extending one leg from a closed position to an open position in a controlled and deliberate manner. Typically, a développpe begins with the working leg bent at the knee, with the foot placed at the dancer's ankle, knee, or thigh in a position called retiré. From this retiré position, the leg is then slowly and smoothly extended to a full extension, usually to 90 degrees (à la seconde) or 180 degrees (en l'air).

The execution of a développé requires significant strength, flexibility, and control from the dancer. It emphasizes the articulation of the foot and ankle, the extension of the knee and hip, and the maintenance of proper posture and balance throughout the movement. Dancers often practice développés at the barre to build the necessary musculature and coordination. This exercise is crucial for developing turnout, line, and overall grace.

Développés can be performed in various directions, including devant (front), à la seconde (to the side), and derrière (back). They are integral to many ballet combinations, allegro steps, and adagio work, serving as a building block for more complex choreography and demonstrating the dancer's technical prowess and artistry.
