Dépithéliums can occur naturally as part of a biological process or be induced for medical or research purposes.

Naturally, dépithéliums is a continuous and dynamic process. For instance, the skin constantly sheds its outermost layer of epidermal cells, a process known as desquamation, which is a form of dépithéliums. Similarly, the lining of the gastrointestinal tract undergoes regular renewal, with old cells being sloughed off and replaced by new ones. This natural shedding is crucial for maintaining tissue integrity and function.

In a medical context, dépithéliums might be intentionally performed. For example, in ophthalmology, a procedure called phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) involves removing damaged or irregular epithelial cells from the surface of the cornea to improve vision. In dermatology, procedures like chemical peels or dermabrasion aim to remove damaged layers of skin, including the epithelium, to promote regeneration and improve skin texture.
