Débit refers to the rate at which a fluid, such as a liquid or gas, flows through a specific point or volume over a given period. There are two primary ways to measure débit: volumetric débit and mass débit. Volumetric débit, often denoted by the symbol Q or V̇, quantifies the volume of fluid passing a point per unit time. Common units include cubic meters per second (m³/s), liters per minute (L/min), or gallons per hour (gal/h). Mass débit, denoted by ṁ, measures the mass of fluid passing a point per unit time. Its units are typically kilograms per second (kg/s) or pounds per minute (lb/min). The relationship between volumetric and mass débit depends on the fluid's density.

Understanding débit is crucial for designing and operating systems involving fluid transport. For instance, in water supply systems, engineers calculate débit to ensure adequate water pressure and flow to homes and businesses. In medicine, measuring blood débit helps diagnose and monitor various cardiovascular conditions. In environmental science, débits of rivers and atmospheric currents are studied to understand water resources, pollution dispersion, and climate patterns.
