This network is not static but is constantly assembling and disassembling, a process crucial for numerous cellular functions. The main components of the cytoskeleton are microtubules, microfilaments (actin filaments), and intermediate filaments, each with distinct structural roles and dynamic properties.

Microtubules, composed of tubulin, undergo rapid polymerization and depolymerization, influencing cell shape, intracellular transport, and chromosome segregation during cell division. Microfilaments, made of actin, are involved in cell movement, muscle contraction, and cytokinesis. Their dynamics, regulated by various actin-binding proteins, allow for rapid changes in cell shape and the formation of structures like filopodia and lamellipodia.
