Cycloplegia refers to the paralysis of the ciliary muscle in the eye. This muscle is responsible for changing the shape of the lens, allowing the eye to focus on objects at different distances, a process known as accommodation. When the ciliary muscle is paralyzed, the eye loses its ability to accommodate, meaning it cannot focus on near objects.

The most common cause of cycloplegia is the use of cycloplegic eye drops. These drops are potent anticholinergic medications that temporarily inhibit the action of the ciliary muscle. They are frequently used by ophthalmologists and optometrists during eye examinations to measure a person's refractive error (like myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism) accurately. By paralyzing the focusing muscle, these drops prevent the eye from accommodating during the testing, ensuring that the measured prescription reflects the eye's true refractive state rather than its ability to adjust.

Other causes of cycloplegia can include certain medications taken orally or intravenously, neurological conditions affecting the nerves that control the ciliary muscle, and trauma to the eye. In most cases, cycloplegia induced by eye drops is temporary, with the effects lasting for several hours to a few days, depending on the specific medication used and the individual's response. Symptoms include blurred vision, especially for near tasks, and sensitivity to light.
