Cyclitis is an inflammation of the ciliary body, a part of the uvea located in the eye. The uvea is the middle layer of the eyeball, containing the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Inflammation of the ciliary body is also known as iridocyclitis when the iris is also affected, which is a common occurrence.

Symptoms of cyclitis can vary but often include eye pain, redness, light sensitivity (photophobia), blurred vision, and the presence of floaters. The pain can be dull or sharp and may radiate to the temple. Vision changes can range from mild blurriness to significant vision loss, depending on the severity of the inflammation and any complications.

The causes of cyclitis are diverse and can include autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, infections (viral, bacterial, or fungal), trauma to the eye, or it can be idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. In some cases, cyclitis can be associated with other eye conditions.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist, including checking visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and examining the anterior chamber of the eye with a slit lamp. Blood tests or imaging studies may be ordered if an underlying systemic condition is suspected.

Treatment for cyclitis aims to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and prevent complications such as glaucoma or cataracts. This often involves topical corticosteroid eye drops, and sometimes oral corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications. Mydriatic (pupil-dilating) eye drops may be used to prevent the iris from sticking to the lens. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for preserving vision.
