Cyanoacrylate is a class of strong, fast-acting adhesives commonly known by brand names such as Super Glue or Loctite. These adhesives are monomeric compounds that polymerize rapidly in the presence of moisture, forming long, durable chains. This polymerization process is what gives cyanoacrylates their remarkable bonding strength and quick setting times.

The primary component of most cyanoacrylate adhesives is ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate. However, other esters, like methyl or butyl cyanoacrylate, are also used, offering slightly different properties such as flexibility or reduced odor. The adhesive works by reacting with trace amounts of water present on surfaces. This reaction initiates a chain-growth polymerization, creating a rigid plastic bond.

Cyanoacrylates are widely used in household repairs, model making, and some industrial applications. They are effective on a variety of materials including plastics, rubber, metal, and ceramics. However, they are not ideal for applications requiring high flexibility or exposure to extreme temperatures or moisture, as the bond can become brittle and degrade under such conditions. Due to their rapid bonding, care must be taken during application to avoid bonding skin or other unwanted surfaces. Accidental bonding of skin to skin can usually be resolved by soaking in warm, soapy water or using specialized removers.
