Cultural preservation is the practice of maintaining and transmitting a society's cultural heritage, including languages, knowledge, beliefs, arts, crafts, rituals, and artifacts. It encompasses both tangible heritage, such as monuments, archives, and objects, and intangible heritage, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, and knowledge systems. The aim is to safeguard these elements from loss and to enable their continued participation in contemporary life while respecting diversity and local agency.

Preservation employs a range of methods: documentation and recording of oral histories and practices; conservation and restoration of physical artifacts and sites; digitization and archiving of collections; education and community programs to teach skills and values; and support for language revival and traditional crafts. International frameworks, notably UNESCO conventions, promote safeguarding and encourage member states to create inventories, protect living heritage, and foster participatory approaches.

Key actors include governments, museums, archives, libraries, NGOs, researchers, and especially the communities who are custodians of the heritage. Ethical considerations emphasize consent, ownership, benefit-sharing, and avoiding extractive or commodifying practices. Successful preservation often relies on participatory planning, community-led initiatives, and the integration of preservation with living cultural practice.

Challenges include limited resources, political conflict, habitat and climate pressures, urbanization, and the pressures of tourism. Tensions can arise between modernization and tradition, or between external valuation and local significance. When done responsibly, cultural preservation supports identity, education, social cohesion, and intercultural understanding, helping to maintain a record of human creativity for future generations.
