Cseppfertőzés, also known as droplet infection, is a mode of transmission for infectious agents where microorganisms are expelled from the respiratory tract of an infected individual in small droplets, typically during coughing, sneezing, or talking. These droplets, ranging in size from approximately 0.5 to 10 micrometers, can carry viruses, bacteria, or fungi.

The transmission occurs when these airborne droplets land on the mucous membranes of a susceptible person's eyes, nose, or mouth, or when they are inhaled directly into the respiratory system. The distance of transmission is generally limited, often within a few feet of the infected source, due to the relatively short travel distance of these droplets. Factors such as air currents and humidity can influence the spread.

Common examples of diseases transmitted through cseppfertőzés include influenza, the common cold, pertussis (whooping cough), and tuberculosis. Preventive measures often focus on reducing the generation and inhalation of these droplets. These include frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and the use of face masks, particularly in crowded or enclosed spaces. Maintaining good ventilation in indoor environments also plays a role in diluting the concentration of infectious droplets.
